While bipolar disorder is a serious, life-long condition, with the right treatment a sufferer can live a healthy and happy life, without tmanic and depressive episodes recurring. Diagnosis can be difficult, with recent studies showing a diagnosis time for most sufferers averaging 10 years, with many people simply being diagnosed with depression. The first thing you must do if you suspect you or someone you know may be suffering from the condition, is ensure a proper diagnosis. Please note, BPD mood swings tend to change more rapidly than with bipolar.

What are the treatment options for a bipolar sufferer?

Bipolar sufferers are usually treated with a combination of psychological therapy and medication, this is usually long term and should include lifestyle changes and other ongoing support.

Medication may often be required and may be life-long. Any medication needs to be taken as directed, sufferers tend to stop taking medication when they feel well, however it is important that you work with a professional when making any changes to your medication.

Psychological or 'talking therapy' therapy will usually be used in conjunction with medication and will be instrumental in recovery.
